Chapter 3 summary
Module 3 starts off by introducing some of the most common search engines. The search engines discussed were Google, Bing and Yahoo. I primarily use Google as my search engine. I was not aware that Yahoo could be used as a search engine. I always thought it was a news and chat website. I never heard of the search engine Bing. Following this chapter, I checked out Bing and Yahoo. I still prefer using Google as my search engine. In my opinion, Google is more similar to Bing then Yahoo. The Yahoo search engine seems to show the most sponsored webpages when searching something.
A meta tag is HTML code that a webpage creater places in the head section of the webpage for the specific purpose of informing web robots about the page’s content. Interesting, I have heard of web robots before but not meta tags. This chapter also discussed stemming and stemming is a way to look for variants. I now have an idea how, and why, there are so many search results that appear when searching for something in a search engine.
It is handy that you can use operators like filetype and location to narrow your search. I did not know that you could search the web by an image or picture. I am not quite sure if I would ever need to use that, but it is interesting. Additionally, I learned about using search operators AND, OR, and NOT. I was familiar with them since I used them in me previous CIS course. After reading this chapter I learned about new search engines, functions of search engines, and useful aspects regarding searching the web that I did not know.
